Land Rover Series 2a for sale in NORTH YORKSHIRE
Drive side: RHD
1967 Land Rover Series 2a Purchased in 1967 By Nikolias Gromyko via Robert Searle of Sunbury on Thames this vehicle has always been a Carawagon. The conversion was done directly from the factory.
There is some correspondence between the original owner and Searle to support this. It left the Land Rover factory as a Right hand drive export model but was only exported as far as Sunbury on Thames.
The vehicle was owned by the Gromyko family until around 2000. Since then it changed hands a few times until i came in to my possession in 2007. There are 5 former keepers shown on the V5 but none of them (with the exception of Gromyko) seemed to do anything with it!
The vehicle was a total basket case when I bought it but over the years I have brought it back to life and made a few necessary upgrades.
The chassis is the original one and is in very good condition however the rear crossmember has been replaced. All the body panels doors etc. are in good order however there is a dent in the front nearside wing. Why? well, there's a story behind that!
When I acquired the vehicle I was lucky enough to also get the original Log Book as well as the Owners Handbook and other correspondence. The log book led me to the Gromyko family and, in particular, Elizabeth. Nikolias' wife. She told me of a trip through the mountain passes in Yugoslavia and of an attack by land pirates. The dent occurred when the Land Rover hit a section of road that the pirates had oiled in the hope that any car that came along would slip off the road and plunge down a ravine where the pirates were waiting to take what they could. However because the Land Rover was " so bloody slow" it instead slid around and hit the mountain on the other side of the road denting the wing. The family then were able to make their escape before they could be caught. As a result of being told this story I elected not to repair the dent. (The dent is minor)
Although the vehicle has always been a Diesel it has been upgraded. The original engine was just not up to the job and had been badly reconditioned. There is a 200 Tdi under the bonnet now along with an intercooler and oil cooler. This is fitted to the original 4 speed gearbox that now has a Fairy overdrive. The axles are now fitted with 3.5:1 differentials to allow the vehicle to hold its own on modern roads. I have enjoyed many trips in this Land Rover both home and abroad returning 25 mpg. It has never let me down.
The restoration work carried out has been sympathetic with a view to keeping it original as possible.
At the last count (carried out by the Carawagon and six pot association) there were only 25 known examples of the series 2a Carawagon.
It was never my intention to sell this wonderful vehicle but life hasn't worked out as I planned and a divorce has forced me in to a VERY reluctant sale.
Owning such a vehicle carries some responsibility. I ask that only people serious about owning a historically significant vehicle contact me.
12 months MOT on collection.
